Susan Boyle: Idol or Not?

I'm sure by now many of you have caught the Youtube sensation Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent show, and there has been a big hoo-ha about how this 47 year old woman managed to belt out such an amazing voice to charm the audience. In an earlier season, Paul Potts (in his signature buckteeth) also belted out an opera piece, went on to win it, and has since flourished in his opera career.

The rags-to-riches storyline is indeed common, and apparently people LOVE to hear about someone less than ordinary to do something extraordinarily well. People are intrigued about how so-and-so managed to overcome all odds to finally achieve his/her dream. Trust me, it always sells. For example: Comparing a person who was a Christian all his/her life since birth, backslided halfway and led a normal life, and then came back to church few years down the road for good. Compare that with a person who was persecuted, left church, smoked, did drugs, got raped, almost prostituted, but eventually there came a divine moment where God touched the person's life and came back for good.

I mean our testimonies all testify of God's goodness in our lives, but what exactly do I drive at here? Yes, it is true that the second scenario was more "colourful" and "happening" and people are inclined to side with the person with the "colourful" story. Amongst all the controversy that the media people wanted it in, boost viewership and ratings (all that is completely natural in entertainment), we should always be impartial when voting in such contests.

My stand:

People are bound to root for Susan Boyle because she stunned the world. But it should'nt be overdone. Regardless whether she wins or not, this competition is shopping for talent. It would be great if she won of course, but if she doesnt, I would still recognise her effort because she did her best.

With regards to our testimonies of salvation, it is important to recognise that G. is not looking for who He can save to create an exceptional testimony. Salvation cannot be regarded as a "talent contest" or "who wants to be the best salvation story" because J. came not to save certain people, but to save all. Likewise in doing His will, it dosent matter how normal/exceptional your salvation case is. What matters is the courage in decision making, and the ending. Will it be a resounding celebration?

Who will you be? Paul Potts/ William Hung?
